Synopsis

A Thousand Acres is a novel by Jane Smiley that tells the story of a family farm in Iowa and the complex relationships between the family members. The story is narrated by Ginny Cook, one of three daughters of Larry Cook, a successful farmer who decides to divide his thousand-acre farm among his daughters.

As the story unfolds, the family dynamics are revealed to be fraught with tension and secrets. Ginny and her sisters, Rose and Caroline, each have their own struggles and desires, and their relationships with their father and each other are strained.
