Synopsis

American Pop is a 1981 animated musical drama film directed by Ralph Bakshi. The film follows four generations of a Russian Jewish immigrant family of musicians whose careers parallel the history of American popular music in the 20th century.

The story begins in the early 20th century with Zalmie, a young Jewish boy who escapes Russia during the pogroms and emigrates to America. He becomes a vaudeville singer and eventually fathers a son, Benny, who becomes a jazz musician in the 1920s.

As the decades pass, the family's musical legacy continues with Benny's son Tony becoming a rock star in the 1960s and his son Pete pursuing a career in punk rock in the 1980s.

American Pop explores themes of family, legacy, and the evolution of popular music in America. The film features a soundtrack of iconic songs from each era, making it a unique and engaging experience for music lovers and history buffs alike.
