Descendants of the Sun is a story about fated relationships that face challenges of time and place. Yoo Shi Jin, the leader of a Special Forces unit, meets trauma surgeon Kang Mo Yeon in a hospital emergency room after chasing down a thief with his second-in-command, Seo Dae Young, on their day off.
Shi Jin is immediately smitten with Mo Yeon and asks her out on a date. However, their conflicting views on human life (he will kill to protect his country while she prioritizes saving lives) and Shi Jin's constant duty calls lead them to break off their budding relationship.
Dae Young also tries to end his relationship with Army doctor Yoon Myeong Ju due to her father's preference for Shi Jin as a match for his daughter. Shi Jin and Dae Young are then deployed to the war-torn country of Urk on a long-term assignment to help the United Nations maintain peace.
Meanwhile, Mo Yeon, feeling overlooked for promotions due to her lack of connections, shifts her focus to becoming a celebrity TV doctor. However, after rejecting the advances of the hospital chairman, she is chosen to lead a medical team to a clinic in Urk, where she unexpectedly reunites with Shi Jin.
