Forever Lulu is a story about Lulu McAfee, who lives in a San Francisco home for mentally-ill adults. In June 1999, she decides to leave for Los Angeles and reaches out to Ben Clifton, an old flame who is currently unhappy in his marriage to psychiatrist Claire and working in television.
Ben is concerned about Lulu's mental state and considers calling her doctor, but Lulu drops a bombshell - she reveals they have a son together, born during their past affair. Despite his doubts, Ben agrees to drive Lulu to Wisconsin to meet their son on his sixteenth birthday, a meeting Lulu claims is prearranged.
During the road trip, Lulu tries to reignite their past romance and inspire Ben's lost idealism. Meanwhile, Claire flies to Madison to witness the potential collapse of her marriage. The question arises - is there really a son, and what emotional challenges will the journey bring to light?
