Martin is a former Parisian bobo who has more or less voluntarily converted into a baker in a Norman village. From his youthful ambitions, he retains a strong capacity for imagination, and a still lively passion for great literature, particularly that of Gustave Flaubert. One can imagine his excitement when a couple of English people, with strangely familiar names, come to settle in a nearby farmhouse. Not only do the newcomers call themselves Gemma and Charles Bovery, but their behaviors also seem to be inspired by Flaubert's heroes. For the creator that lies dormant in Martin, the opportunity is too good to shape - in addition to his daily flour - the destiny of flesh-and-blood characters. But the pretty Gemma Bovery, she, has not read her classics, and intends to live her own life...
