Goya in Bordeaux tells the story of Francisco Goya (1746-1828), who, deaf and ill, spends his final years in voluntary exile in Bordeaux. He is a Liberal protesting the oppressive rule of Ferdinand VII. Living with his much younger wife Leocadia and their daughter Rosario, Goya continues to paint at night.
In flashbacks triggered by conversations with his daughter, terrible headaches, and the confusion of old age, Goya relives key moments in his life. This includes his relationship with the Duchess of Alba, his discovery of his artistic style inspired by Velázquez, and his lifelong celebration of the imagination.
Throughout the film, Goya's reveries become tableaux of his paintings, showcasing his artistic genius and the impact of his life experiences on his work.
