Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens that follows the life of an orphan named Pip. The story begins with Pip living with his sister and her husband, Joe, in a small village in England. One day, Pip encounters an escaped convict in a graveyard who demands food and a file to remove his chains. Despite being scared, Pip helps the convict and keeps his secret.
Later, Pip is invited to the home of the wealthy Miss Havisham to play with her adopted daughter, Estella. Pip falls in love with Estella, but she treats him coldly and mocks his humble background. Miss Havisham raises Estella to break men's hearts as revenge for being jilted on her wedding day.
As Pip grows older, he receives a mysterious benefactor who provides him with money to become a gentleman in London. Pip assumes the money is from Miss Havisham, but later discovers it is from a convict he helped in the past. Despite his newfound wealth and status, Pip struggles with his conscience and the realization that his expectations may not lead to happiness.
Great Expectations explores themes of social class, ambition, and the consequences of one's actions. It is a timeless tale of love, betrayal, and redemption that continues to captivate readers around the world.
