King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The play follows the story of King Lear, who decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters based on how much they love him. Goneril and Regan flatter their father with false declarations of love, while Cordelia refuses to participate in the charade. As a result, Lear banishes Cordelia and divides his kingdom between Goneril and Regan.
However, Lear soon realizes his mistake as Goneril and Regan turn against him, leaving him homeless and wandering the countryside. Along the way, Lear encounters Edgar, a nobleman who has been wrongfully accused of treason by his brother Edmund. The play explores themes of power, betrayal, and madness as Lear descends into madness and chaos ensues.
Ultimately, Lear is reunited with Cordelia, but their reunion is short-lived as tragedy strikes. The play ends with Lear's death and Cordelia's demise, leaving the audience to ponder the consequences of greed and deceit.
