Synopsis

In 1968 a young aboriginal boxer with a charming smile punched his way to history when he stopped Fighting Harada in Japan over fifteen rounds. His name was Lionel Rose and he became the undisputed world bantamweight champion.

Two hundred and fifty thousand people hit the streets of Melbourne to welcome him back and he went on to become a symbolic figure in the interracial politics of the times.

Combining a remarkable selection of archival and present day observational footage and interviews, the film explores how Lionel became a mythic sporting figure and his struggle with the dimensions of that myth in his every day life.

Steven Jones
2/10

The soundtrack of Lionel fails to capture the emotional depth and intensity of the boxer's journey and struggles. The music feels generic and uninspired, lacking the power to connect with the audience on a deeper level.

Andrew Adams
2/10

The choice of music in Lionel often feels disconnected from the narrative, creating a jarring and disjointed viewing experience. The soundtrack fails to enhance the storytelling and instead detracts from the overall impact of the film.

Donna Anderson

The music in Lionel evokes a sense of nostalgia and reverence for Lionel Rose's legacy, honoring his contributions to both sports and society.

Robert Moore
7/10

The music enhances the emotional depth of the documentary, providing a powerful backdrop to Lionel's journey and struggles.

Paul Jackson
6/10

On the other hand, some tracks in the soundtrack of Lionel feel repetitive and fail to evoke a deeper emotional connection with the audience. While the music sets the tone for the film, there are moments where a more diverse selection of sounds could have enhanced the overall viewing experience and added layers of complexity to Lionel Rose's story.

Carol Walker

The use of different musical styles and genres in the soundtrack adds layers of complexity to the storytelling, keeping the audience engaged throughout.

Charles Lee
7/10

The soundtrack of Lionel perfectly captures the spirit and energy of the era in which Lionel Rose rose to fame as a boxing champion.

Timothy Harris
4/10

Overall, the music in Lionel feels like an afterthought, hastily put together without much consideration for the emotional resonance it should evoke. It falls short of capturing the essence of Lionel Rose's remarkable life and achievements, leaving a sense of missed opportunity in its wake.

Steven Davis
6/10

The soundtrack of Lionel perfectly captures the energy and intensity of the boxing matches, creating a sense of excitement and anticipation. The use of traditional Aboriginal music adds a unique cultural dimension to the film, enhancing the storytelling and immersing the audience in Lionel Rose's world.
