Lost in Yonkers is a story set in 1942 in the Bronx, where Evelyn Kurnitz has recently passed away after a long illness. Her husband, Eddie Kurnitz, must take a job as a traveling salesman to pay off the medical bills. He asks his stern mother, with whom he is somewhat estranged, if his two sons, Jay and Arty, can live with her and their Aunt Bella in Yonkers.
Despite their Grandma owning a candy store, Jay and Arty are not happy with their new living situation. They are afraid of their Grandma and find it hard to connect with their eccentric Aunt Bella, who has a childlike demeanor due to her slow mental state.
Another sibling, Louie Kurnitz, a henchman for gangsters, returns to their lives. He is hiding from Hollywood Harry, who is after what Louie stole. Jay and Arty's goal becomes making money quickly to help their father and reunite their family, even if it means stealing the $15,000 their Grandma has hidden.
Bella also has a mission: to announce her desire to marry Johnny, her slow movie theater usher boyfriend. They need $5,000 from her mother to open their dream restaurant. Meanwhile, Louie's mission is simply to survive the next few days.
