Once upon a time, in 1942, in German-occupied France, there lived a young woman by the name of Marie. One morning, Marie finds a 9-year-old boy sitting on her doorstep. He is Jewish and his parents have been taken away by French police. What is she to do with him? He has nowhere else to go. Marie decided to hide him at her parents' house, way out in the country. But Marie doesn't know that the stubborn French police inspector is one Jew short of his quota. She only just manages to save him from the inspector, with the help of various Resistance networks, and she takes him far away to a place where many children are hidden. Eventually, Marie takes seven Jewish children under her wing. She is determined to get them across into the relative safety of Vichy-controlled territory.
