Synopsis

Metal: A Headbanger's Journey follows Sam Dunn, a 30-year old anthropologist who previously studied the plight of Guatemalan refugees for his graduate thesis. Now, he has turned his attention to a different culture - the world of heavy metal, which he has been a part of since he was 12 years old.

Sam embarks on a global journey to uncover why heavy metal music has been consistently stereotyped, dismissed, and condemned, despite being passionately loved by millions of fans. Throughout his travels to the UK, Germany, Norway, Canada, and the US, Sam delves into metal's fascination with provocative subjects such as sexuality, religion, violence, and death.

Through this documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey aims to defend the long-misunderstood art form of heavy metal while also providing outsiders with a glimpse into the spectacle that is the metal culture. Sam discovers aspects of the culture that even he struggles to defend, shedding light on the complexities and controversies within the metal community.
