Mountains May Depart is a Chinese drama film directed by Jia Zhangke. The film follows the life of a young woman named Tao and her relationships with two men, Zhang and Liang, over the span of three decades.
The story is divided into three parts, each set in a different time period: 1999, 2014, and 2025. In 1999, Tao is torn between her love for Zhang, a wealthy businessman, and Liang, a coal miner with humble roots. As China undergoes rapid economic development, Tao's choices reflect the changing social landscape of the country.
In 2014, Tao is divorced from Zhang and living in Australia with their son, Dollar. Liang, who has remained loyal to Tao over the years, reconnects with her and Dollar. The film explores themes of family, identity, and the impact of globalization on personal relationships.
The final part of the film is set in 2025, where Dollar, now a young adult, struggles to connect with his Chinese heritage and find his place in the world. Mountains May Depart is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the passage of time.
