Synopsis

The Best of Youth is a film that follows a chronological timeline from 1963 to 2003, showcasing various events across Italy. It moves from Rome to the floods of Florence in 1966, student unrest in Turin, Mafia murders in Palermo, chance encounters in Milan, and even includes two trips to Norway.

Brothers Matteo and Nicola, who have opposite temperaments, attempt to free Giorgia, a teenager, from a mental institution. Their unsuccessful attempt leads Nicola into psychiatry and Matteo into the police force.

In Florence, Nicola meets Giulia, a musician and leftist with ties to the Red Brigade. Their relationship is strained after they have a child. Meanwhile, in Palermo, Matteo meets Mirella, a photographer, and they reconnect in Rome.

The film delves into themes of love, family, friendship, politics, mental illness, tragedy, and the opportunities to forgive and heal.
