Synopsis

Pearl is a novel written by John Steinbeck, published in 1947. The story follows a Mexican-Indian pearl diver named Kino, who discovers a valuable pearl that he believes will bring him wealth and happiness.

However, tragedy strikes when Kino's son is bitten by a scorpion, leading Kino to seek out a doctor's help. The doctor refuses to treat the boy because Kino is poor, sparking a series of events that threaten to destroy Kino's family.

As Kino tries to sell the pearl, he faces greed, betrayal, and violence from those around him who want to take advantage of his newfound wealth. The novel explores themes of human nature, wealth, and the corrupting power of money.

In the end, Kino realizes that the pearl has brought him nothing but suffering and loss, leading him to throw it back into the sea in a final act of defiance against the forces that have tried to control him.
