Synopsis

PEN15 is a comedy series that follows the lives of two middle school girls, Maya and Anna, as they navigate the ups and downs of adolescence in the year 2000. The twist? The two main characters are played by adult actresses, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who portray their 13-year-old selves alongside actual middle schoolers.

The show explores the awkwardness, insecurities, and challenges of growing up, as Maya and Anna deal with issues such as puberty, crushes, friendship, and family dynamics. Despite their age difference, the adult actresses convincingly capture the essence of being a teenager, making the show both hilarious and heartwarming.

Through its nostalgic references to the early 2000s and its authentic portrayal of the teenage experience, PEN15 has garnered critical acclaim for its unique concept and relatable storytelling.

I found the soundtrack of PEN15 to be quite disappointing. The musical choices often felt out of place and distracting, failing to enhance the emotional depth of the scenes. The lack of cohesion between the music and the storyline made it difficult for me to fully immerse myself in the nostalgic world of the early 2000s.

Additionally, I felt that the repetitive use of popular songs from that era became tiresome and predictable. Instead of adding a fresh perspective to the show, the soundtrack ended up feeling like a lazy attempt to capitalize on viewers' nostalgia. Overall, I believe the music selection in PEN15 fell short of capturing the essence of the adolescent experience and missed an opportunity to elevate the storytelling.
