Synopsis

Twelve year old Marcus Brewer lives with his chronically depressed single mother, Fiona Brewer. Both Fiona and Marcus beat to their own respective drummers. Marcus will do whatever he can to make his depressed mother happy, even if it causes himself grief. As such, he realizes that he is perceived as different than most kids, as even the self-professed weird kids don't want to hang out with him as he is the target of bullying. Part of the taunts against him are the fact that he sings and speaks to himself without even realizing that he is doing it.

Meanwhile, thirty-eight year old Will Freeman is a slacker who has lived comfortably off the royalties of a song written by his deceased father, and as such has never had to work a day in his life. He is a solitary man who places himself as the first and only priority in life. He comes across the idea that dating single moms meets his selfish carnal needs. It is in this capacity that Will meets Marcus, as one of Will's single mother conquests, Suzie, is friends with the Brewers. Trying to escape his life but wanting Will to date Fiona, Marcus infiltrates Will's life, much to Will's chagrin.

Will slowly begins to realize that Marcus is more than just a nuisance, but rather someone who needs some guidance navigating through the trials of adolescence and the trials of dealing with a suicidal mother, and perhaps he can be a small part of providing that direction. Conversely, Marcus may be able to show Will the path to becoming a real adult.

The use of music as a storytelling device in About a Boy is masterfully done, amplifying the emotional impact of key moments and enriching the overall viewing experience.

Steven Green
10/10

The soundtrack of About a Boy is a perfect complement to the emotional depth of the characters' journeys. The music enhances the themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the complexities of relationships.

Richard Anderson
4/10

The soundtrack of About a Boy felt out of place and disconnected from the emotional depth of the characters' struggles. The music choices seemed generic and failed to enhance the storytelling, leaving me feeling unengaged with the film's themes.

Thomas Martinez
10/10

Overall, the soundtrack of About a Boy elevates the viewing experience, making it a truly immersive and memorable cinematic journey.

Mary Carter
6/10

On the other hand, the soundtrack also injects moments of levity and warmth into the story, reflecting Will's transformation from a self-absorbed slacker to a caring mentor for Marcus. The upbeat and playful tunes mirror the budding friendship between Will and Marcus, highlighting the heartwarming moments of connection and growth between the unlikely duo. Overall, the soundtrack of About a Boy is a masterful blend of emotion and charm, enriching the narrative with its evocative musical choices.

Nancy Mitchell
7/10

The music selection in the film adds a layer of authenticity to the characters' experiences, creating a sense of connection with the audience and immersing them in the narrative.

Amanda Walker
3/10

I found the musical score in About a Boy to be overly simplistic and repetitive, lacking the complexity needed to capture the nuances of the characters' inner turmoil. The repetitive use of certain motifs became tiresome and detracted from the overall viewing experience.

Richard Jackson
8/10

The soundtrack of About a Boy perfectly captures the emotional depth of the characters' journeys, enhancing the storytelling with its evocative melodies and arrangements.

Laura Phillips
9/10

The variety of songs in the soundtrack adds layers of nuance to the storytelling, capturing both the whimsical moments and the poignant struggles faced by Marcus and Will. Each track feels carefully chosen to evoke specific emotions, creating a powerful connection between the audience and the characters.

David King
6/10

The soundtrack of About a Boy perfectly captures the emotional complexity of the characters' journeys. The music enhances the poignant moments between Marcus and Fiona, adding depth to their struggles with depression and loneliness. The use of subtle piano melodies and somber strings creates a sense of melancholy that resonates with the audience, making the film's themes even more powerful.

Richard Johnson
2/10

The soundtrack of About a Boy failed to evoke any genuine emotional response from me as a viewer. The music felt like an afterthought rather than a crucial element in conveying the poignant moments of the story. I was left wanting more depth and originality in the musical composition to truly connect with the characters' journeys.
