Synopsis

Riding in Cars with Boys is a seriocomic story based on the memoir by Beverly Donofrio. The movie follows a young woman whose life is radically altered by an event from her teen years.

Born in 1950, Beverly grew up bright and ambitious in a working-class neighborhood in Connecticut. Her father, a tough but good-hearted cop, listened to her problems, while her nervous mother always imagined the worst.

From an early age, Beverly displayed keen intelligence and an interest in literature. She dreamed of going to college in New York and becoming a writer. However, her early interest in boys led to an embarrassing incident at a party when she was 15.

Ray, a sweet but thick-headed 18-year-old, stepped forward to defend her. Beverly and Ray ended up making out, and she discovered she was pregnant. Telling Ray and her parents was difficult, and at 16, Beverly became a wife and mother.

Despite the odds, Beverly was determined to finish high school and go to college. However, her marriage began to fall apart as Ray struggled to hold a job and became addicted to heroin.
