Strange Circus is a twisted tale set in Tokyo, where the twelve year-old girl Mitsuko accidentally witnesses her parents engaging in sexual activities in their bedroom. Her dysfunctional and perverted father, Ozawa Gozo, who also happens to be the principal of her school, forces Mitsuko to watch her mother Sayuri having intercourse with him while hidden inside a cello case.
Things take a darker turn when Ozawa rapes Mitsuko and forces Sayuri to witness the incestuous act between him and their daughter. The family dynamic becomes even more disturbing as Ozawa continues to have sexual relations with both Mitsuko and Sayuri, leading to jealousy and dysfunction within the household.
The dysfunctional family's turmoil escalates with a murder and an attempted suicide, but the bizarre events are revealed to be part of a novel written by the disabled writer Taeko, who uses a wheelchair for mobility. When her publisher and his new hire Yuji visit her, Yuji helps Taeko uncover the truth about her past.
As the story unfolds, the line between reality and fantasy blurs, leaving the characters and the audience questioning which parts of the narrative are real and which are merely dreams.
