Synopsis

The Hi-Lo Country is a 1998 American Western film directed by Stephen Frears. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Max Evans.

The story is set in post-World War II New Mexico and follows the lives of two best friends, Big Boy Matson and Pete Calder. They are both cowboys who have returned home after the war and are trying to make a living in the changing landscape of the American West.

Big Boy and Pete find themselves caught in a love triangle with a beautiful woman named Mona. Mona is married to Jim Ed Love, a wealthy and powerful rancher who controls the town. Despite the risks, Big Boy and Mona begin a passionate affair, which leads to tension and conflict between the friends.

As the story unfolds, the characters are forced to confront their own desires, loyalties, and the harsh realities of life in the Hi-Lo Country. The film explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the struggle for independence in a changing world.

The Hi-Lo Country received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for its performances and cinematography. It was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
