John Kaddly grew up surrounded by live jazz music, his father Bernie Kaddly was a jazz tenor saxophonist, John went to hear his father playing live in Toronto jazz clubs even as a child. Despite this life that barely makes ends meet for his family, John has always dreamed of making a living as a musician, specifically as a drummer. Bernie instilled in John a sense of discipline as he was used to music, competitive world being that he is, with only the cream rising to the top in limited opportunities. John is now estranged from his parents, the last straw being his mother, Karen Kaddly, making him feel what he calls "shit" in her desire for him to focus more attention on his upbringing than just drumming. , something that he didn't see the need to be a musician, first, last and in between.
