Synopsis

The Long Song is a historical novel written by Andrea Levy. The story is set in Jamaica during the final years of slavery and follows the life of July, a young slave girl who works on a sugar plantation.

July's world is turned upside down when the plantation owner's sister, Caroline, decides to take her as a personal maid. Despite the harsh conditions of slavery, July finds herself in a position of power and influence as she navigates the complex relationships between slaves and their owners.

As the abolitionist movement gains momentum, July must decide where her loyalties lie and how she can secure her freedom in a society built on oppression and inequality. The novel explores themes of race, class, and power dynamics in a gripping and thought-provoking narrative.
