Synopsis

The Professor and the Madman is a historical drama film based on the book "The Surgeon of Crowthorne" by Simon Winchester. The movie tells the story of the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, focusing on the collaboration between Professor James Murray and Dr. William Minor.

Professor James Murray is tasked with compiling the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, a monumental task that requires the help of volunteers to submit definitions and examples of word usage. Dr. William Minor, a former Civil War surgeon who is now confined to an asylum for the criminally insane, becomes one of the most prolific contributors to the dictionary.

As Professor Murray and Dr. Minor correspond through letters, a deep friendship develops between the two men. However, as their relationship grows, dark secrets from Dr. Minor's past come to light, threatening to unravel the work they have done together.

The Professor and the Madman explores themes of friendship, redemption, and the power of language to connect people across boundaries. The film stars Mel Gibson as Professor James Murray and Sean Penn as Dr. William Minor.
