Synopsis

Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father who served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was also the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1776.

Jefferson was a strong advocate for democracy, individual rights, and religious freedom. He believed in limited government and was a proponent of states' rights. As president, he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States.

Jefferson's presidency was marked by his efforts to reduce the national debt and his support for the expansion of public education. He also founded the University of Virginia, which was the first university in the United States to offer a comprehensive curriculum.

After leaving office, Jefferson retired to his estate at Monticello, where he continued to be involved in politics and public affairs. He died on July 4, 1826, the same day as his fellow Founding Father John Adams.
