"Tokyo Cowboy" is a story about No Ogawa, a young Japanese man who loves American western movies. He learned what little English he knows from these movies. After being fired from his job at a fast food restaurant, he decides to become a cowboy.
When he was younger, he had a pen-pal named Kate Beatty, who he plans on visiting in the Canadian prairies because she told him she was a cowgirl. No dreams of riding off into the sunset with Kate, but his dreams are shattered when he discovers that Kate is actually an artist, not a cowgirl.
Kate has been leading a reclusive life in her hometown with no husband on the horizon. Her mother, who hopes for Kate and No to end up together, is keeping a secret about Kate's reclusiveness. Bill, a local postman, becomes No's friend and protector, looking out for him as he navigates his feelings for Kate.
