Miguel is a young boy who lives in poverty with his mother Da Guia, his sister Angela, and her husband Bio in Paraíba. He tries to help his family with household expenses with prostitution and is afraid to tell his family he's a homosexual. His sister is insecure and repressed by her husband, with whom she has not been happy. She lives to take care of the house and her grumpy, unappreciative mother, who suffers from the consequences of untreated diabetes. Miguel has been abused by his brother-in-law for years and feels obliged to hide his secrets from the family. His only comfort is his friendship with shy postman neighbor John, who reads stories every day to 30-year-old blind woman Maura, who longs to have her first sexual experience.
