Synopsis

Valmont is a 1989 drama film directed by Milos Forman, based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The film follows the manipulative and seductive Vicomte de Valmont as he engages in a game of seduction and betrayal with the Marquise de Merteuil.

Valmont is played by Colin Firth, while the Marquise de Merteuil is portrayed by Annette Bening. The film explores themes of power, desire, and deception as Valmont and Merteuil plot to ruin the reputations of their unsuspecting victims.

As the game unfolds, Valmont finds himself falling in love with one of his targets, the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, played by Meg Tilly. This complicates his plans and leads to a tragic conclusion for all involved.

Valmont received mixed reviews upon its release but has since gained a cult following for its lush cinematography and compelling performances. It is often compared to the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons, which was also based on the same novel.
