Synopsis

Waiting is a novel written by Ha Jin that tells the story of two lovers, Lin Kong and Manna Wu, who are separated by duty and tradition. Lin Kong is a military doctor in China who is trapped in a loveless marriage arranged by his parents. He falls in love with Manna, a nurse at his hospital, but their relationship is put on hold for 18 years while Lin waits for his wife to grant him a divorce.

As Lin waits for his freedom, he and Manna struggle with their feelings for each other and the societal pressures that keep them apart. The novel explores themes of duty, tradition, and the sacrifices people make for love.

Waiting is a poignant and powerful story that captures the complexities of love and the human heart. Ha Jin's writing is both lyrical and insightful, drawing readers into the emotional turmoil of his characters as they navigate the challenges of their relationships.
