A really good mystery/detective movie of a different sort. Powers Boothe, a professional gambler called the Preacher because that is what he was earlier in life, is asked by a church pastor to come down to a small Texas-Mexico border city wryly named Farewell to determine if the death of a wartime friend of the Preacher's, Owen Prescott was really a suicide. Prescott had been a local rancher and helicopter pilot for hire. The pastor thinks Owen's death might have had something to do a gambling club that Owen had been involved in. The Preacher quickly begins to realize there is much more than gambling going on, and that dangerous secrets are being hidden by some of the townspeople. But which of the colorful townspeople are telling the truth, and which of the sinister ones are really part of the cover up, or just thugs. Aided by the good guys he meets, endangered repeatedly by the bad ones, and comforted by Owen's sister, who falls for him, the Preacher becomes more of a private investigator than he ever intended. Viewers will have to watch carefully to catch the hints of the truth that Powers is in the process of finding, and that leads to a surprising ending.
