Synopsis

Wolf Totem is a novel by Chinese author Jiang Rong. The story follows a young student from Beijing who is sent to live among the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia during the Cultural Revolution.

He becomes fascinated by the wolves that roam the grasslands and learns about their way of life from the herdsmen. As he grows closer to the wolves, he begins to see them as a symbol of freedom and independence.

However, as the Chinese government begins to encroach on the grasslands and hunt the wolves to protect their livestock, the student is faced with a moral dilemma. Should he stand by and watch as the wolves are driven to extinction, or should he take action to protect them?

The novel explores themes of nature, culture, and the clash between tradition and modernity. It is a powerful and thought-provoking story that has resonated with readers around the world.
