Sinopsis
Una misteriosa historia de amor entre Hamburgo y Taipeh. El asesinato sin resolver de su joven amante taiwanés Ai-ling deja a la artista de Hamburgo Sophie Schmitt completamente desorientada. Le dedica una videoinstalación y la muestra en Taipei. Durante la inauguración, se le acerca un misterioso periodista. A Sophie le fascina a primera vista Mei-li, la joven periodista. Mei-li la lleva a visitar los famosos mercados nocturnos de Taipei y trata de seducir al artista. Sophie, todavía de luto por su amante perdido, rechaza a Mei-li y regresa inmediatamente a Hamburgo. Poco después, Mei-li aparece en la puerta de su casa sin previo aviso. Sophie la acepta y finalmente se enamora de ella. Pero pronto se da cuenta de que su nuevo amante está investigando en secreto la muerte de Ai-ling. Ocurren sucesos extraños, repentinos destellos de recuerdos van y vienen, y luego Sophie descubre que no hay ningún Mei-Li trabajando para un periódico taiwanés y que nadie con ese nombre jamás entró en Alemania. ¿Quién es la misteriosa mujer taiwanesa?
