Sinopsis

Las vidas de varios jóvenes que se someten al entrenamiento básico del Cuerpo de Marines y luego son enviados a Vietnam. El personaje principal es J.T. 'Joker' Davis quien, junto con todos los demás reclutas nuevos, constantemente tiene que lidiar con su exigente Instructor de Tropas, el Sargento Gny. Hartman. Un recluta en particular, Leonard 'Gomer Pyle' Lawrence, está teniendo un momento especialmente difícil, especialmente después de que el DI Hartman castiga a toda la escuadra cada vez que comete un error, lo cual es frecuente. Todo esto conduce a una tragedia. Davis logra sobrevivir y pronto se encuentra en Vietnam trabajando como periodista de combate donde llega a ver los horrores de la guerra de primera mano durante la ofensiva del Tet.
