Sinopsis
Chris Taylor es un joven y ingenuo estadounidense que abandona la universidad y se ofrece como voluntario para combatir en Vietnam. Al llegar, rápidamente descubre que su presencia es bastante prescindible y es considerado insignificante para los demás soldados, ya que no ha luchado tanto tiempo como el resto de ellos y no ha sentido los efectos del combate.
Chris tiene dos suboficiales, el irascible e indestructible Sargento de Estado Mayor Robert Barnes y el más agradable y cooperativo Sargento Elias Grodin. Se traza una línea entre los dos suboficiales y varios hombres en el pelotón cuando ocurre un asesinato ilegal durante un ataque a un pueblo.
