Sinopsis
La fascinante complejidad del debate de la escuela secundaria da paso a un retrato del igualmente complejo sesgo racial y de clase de la educación estadounidense en el fascinante documental de Greg Whiteley. Inicialmente un retrato de los debatientes de primer nivel de escuelas bien financiadas, en su mayoría blancas, como Sam Iola y Matt Andrews de Highland Park, Texas, clasificadas a nivel nacional, la película se profundiza cuando cambia de enfoque a Richard Funches y Louis Blackwell del equipo Jordan de Long Beach. Si bien son polemistas tradicionales dotados por derecho propio, los dos deciden desafiar la utilidad del estilo de debate moderno lleno de jerga de 400 palabras por minuto (conocido como "la difusión") al dirigir sus debates hacia temas de experiencia personal y diálogo. ¿De qué sirve refinar un argumento, enfatizan, cuando no afecta la realidad del lugar y la vida particular de una persona? ¿Por qué deben enmascararse las perspectivas y los prejuicios individuales?
