Sinopsis

Casa Del Norte es una exclusiva comunidad cerrada en el alto desierto a las afueras de Los Ángeles en este oscuro y cómico thriller suburbano. La protagonista es Ellie Christianson, una adolescente de catorce años (interpretada por Julia Stiles) que odia estar allí. Pero su madre Karen también detesta el lugar, y busca consuelo en los brazos del atractivo pero explosivo vecino de al lado, Lawson Smith (interpretado por Patrick Muldoon).

De manera igualmente adúltera, el esposo de Karen, Ben (interpretado por William R. Moses), ha estado viviendo con la au pair sueca, Lena. Completando este retorcido círculo doméstico está Inger, una niña de diez años, dulce e inocente, que está creciendo rápidamente.

A medida que las tensiones aumentan, Karen amenaza con dejar a Ben y a Lawson y marcharse con sus hijos. Sin embargo, cuando está sola empacando sus maletas, alguien irrumpe en la casa... Su cuerpo es descubierto brutalmente asesinado en la cocina.

Entra en escena el veterano detective Boland (interpretado por Michael Parks) quien sospecha de Lawson y luego de Ben, pero no encuentra pruebas contundentes que los vinculen con el asesinato. Después de que Ben pasa una prueba de polígrafo, Boland se ve obligado a considerar otra posibilidad: ¿Podría Ellie haber matado a su madre?

Mientras tanto, nosotros también nos hemos estado preguntando lo mismo. Presenciamos la impactante transformación de Ellie mientras ordena a Inger, cocina, consuela a Ben y trata de encajar en la ropa ajustada de su madre. Luego, durante una tormenta furiosa que parece sacada de una película de terror, Ellie se arrastra bajo la casa y recupera el arma del crimen, ¡una máscara griega aún ensangrentada!

Después de varios giros de trama, un par de romances, una amenaza de chantaje para revelar un oscuro secreto familiar, un segundo asesinato y un tiroteo, llegamos a la revelación final impactante de quién (o quiénes) cometieron los asesinatos.

Pero sea quien sea, Ellie es el verdadero misterio en el epicentro de la historia. Parte femme fatale del cine noir, parte niña demoníaca, ella lleva el peso triste de este Neverland cómico en sus hombros con la gravedad de una figura de la mitología griega, una Electra de los suburbios. La pregunta de quién lo hizo finalmente se vuelve menos importante que lo que el destino tiene reservado, y lo que se revelará sobre todos los involucrados una vez que se disipe el humo.
