Sinopsis
La versión del escritor y director de Maverick Walter Hill de la famosa leyenda de Wild Bill Hickok es un western de paisajes de ensueño que se cuenta completamente en flashback. El amigo de Hickok, Charley Prince (Sir John Hurt), narra los eventos de la vida de Wild Bill mientras está sentado junto a la tumba de Bill. Hickok es interpretado por Jeff Bridges como un forajido mezquino, alegre pero valiente. Vaga por el Oeste, aumentando su reputación con algunos tiroteos bien elegidos, y se encuentra con personajes como Calamity Jane (Ellen Barkin), quien se convierte en su compañera por un tiempo. Después de convertirse en una leyenda, Hickok se inscribe en el programa de variedades itinerante de Buffalo Bill Cody. Finalmente, se enamora de Susannah Moore (Diane Lane), y su amor lo lleva a la tragedia en la ciudad de Deadwood, Dakota del Sur.
