Synopsis
Hamlet (Sir Kenneth Branagh), fils du roi du Danemark (Brian Blessed), est convoqué chez lui pour les funérailles de son père et le mariage de sa mère Gertrude (Julie Christie) avec son oncle Claudius (Sir Derek Jacobi). Dans un épisode surnaturel, il découvre que son oncle, qu'il déteste déjà, a assassiné son père. Dans une intrigue incroyablement complexe, la plus compliquée et la plus intéressante de toute la littérature, il parvient à (impossible de mettre cela dans un ordre exact) feindre (ou peut-être pas feindre) la folie, assassiner le "Premier Ministre", aimer puis désaimer une innocente qu'il pousse à la folie, comploter puis décomploter contre l'oncle, diriger une pièce dans une pièce, conspirer avec succès contre la vie de deux amis bien intentionnés, et enfin se venger de l'oncle, mais seulement au prix de presque toutes les vies sur scène, y compris la sienne et celle de sa mère.
