Susan Keene left her fiance at the altar. It seems that she was more or less going to be a trophy wife. She worked as a copy editor for The Gate, a magazine, which is owned by her fiance's brother, Jack.
After running out of her wedding, Susan returns to The Gate hoping to get her old job back. Jack, who is not exactly happily married, is impressed by her that he offers her a column, which he decides to call Suddenly Susan.
Susan is surrounded by some weird people at the magazine: Vicky, who is a bit of a shrew, who thinks that Susan can get anything she wants cause she is so stunning; Luis, a Latin photographer, who is a bit of a ladies' man, and Todd, a music critic, who is a bit spacy.
During the second season, Maddy Piper, an investigative reporter, whom Susan knew and didn't like in high school, joins the magazine and takes great pride in putting eveybody down. During the third season, Susan and Jack tried to have a relationship.
During the fourth season, Jack, Maddy and Todd were gone. The Gate was bought by the overbearing Ian Maxtone Graham. Accompanying him were his secretary, Miranda, and Nate, a sportwriter. And dropping by every now and then, and catching Susan's attention is Oliver, a friend of Ian's and a freelance photographer.
