Synopsis

Berlin, juillet 1945. Le journaliste Jake Geismer arrive pour couvrir la conférence de Potsdam et se voit remettre un uniforme de capitaine pour faciliter son passage. Il veut également retrouver Lena, une ancienne flamme qui est maintenant une prostituée désespérée de quitter Berlin.

Il découvre que le chauffeur qui lui est assigné, un sadique joyeux du Sud nommé Caporal Tully, est le gardien de Lena. Lorsqu'un homme assassiné est retrouvé à Potsdam (dans le secteur russe), Jake pourrait être la seule personne qui veut résoudre le crime : le personnel américain est occupé à trouver des nazis à traduire en justice, les Russes et les Américains recherchent des scientifiques allemands spécialisés dans les fusées, et Lena a ses propres secrets.
