Synopsis

Une station de recherche américaine, Antarctique, début de l'hiver 1982. La base est soudainement survolée par un hélicoptère de la station de recherche norvégienne voisine. Ils essaient de tuer un chien qui s'est échappé de leur base. Après la destruction de l'hélicoptère norvégien, les membres de l'équipe américaine se rendent à la base norvégienne, pour découvrir qu'ils sont tous morts ou disparus. Ils trouvent cependant les restes d'une étrange créature que les Norvégiens ont brûlée.

Les Américains l'emmènent à leur base et déduisent qu'il s'agit d'une forme de vie extraterrestre. Après un certain temps, il devient évident que l'alien peut prendre le contrôle et s'assimiler à d'autres formes de vie, y compris les humains, et peut se propager comme un virus. Cela signifie que n'importe qui à la base pourrait être habité par La Chose, et les tensions montent.
