Synopsis

En Columbia Clay, Missouri, la joven e ingenua Carrie Meeber aborda el tren esperando encontrarse con su hermana mayor en Chicago y tener una vida mejor en la gran ciudad.

Mientras viaja en el tren, conoce al vendedor de telas Charles Drouet, quien le da su tarjeta.

Una vez en Chicago, encuentra un trabajo sencillo en una fábrica de zapatos cosiendo zapatos, pero cuando se lesiona un dedo, la despiden.

Incapaz de encontrar otro trabajo, busca a Charles, y él la invita a cenar en Fitzgerald's, el restaurante más caro de Chicago, donde conoce al elegante gerente de mediana edad George Hurstwood.

Carrie se muda al apartamento de Charles y se convierte en su amante debido a la falta de opciones, y más tarde George se enamora de ella.

Presionado por su esposa y por el dueño del restaurante para olvidar a Carrie, George abandona todas sus posesiones y desfalca una fortuna del restaurante, viajando con Carrie a Nueva York esperando reconstruir su vida, pero las sombras de su pasado son crueles y lo siguen.
