Nel 1997, Manhattan è stata trasformata nel Penitenziario di massima sicurezza di New York, dove i criminali vengono condannati all'ergastolo. Quando l'Air Force One si schianta a Manhattan con il presidente degli Stati Uniti che sta viaggiando verso un vertice con altri leader, il direttore del carcere Hauk propone un accordo al rapinatore di banche monocolo Snake Plissken. Se riesce a salvare il presidente e la sua cassetta in meno di 23 ore, gli sarà concessa la grazia. Per garantire il pieno impegno di Snake Plissken, Hauk lo attira e gli inietta una capsula letale nel sangue che si dissolverà nel tempo previsto.

Snake Plissken usa un piccolo aereo per atterrare sul tetto del World Trade Center. Presto scopre che il dispositivo di tracciamento è stato rimosso dal presidente. Quando incontra il tassista Cabbie, apprende che il signore della guerra The Duke ha catturato il presidente. Ora Snake Plissken deve fare squadra con il suo ex compagno Brain, che lo ha tradito in passato, e la sua compagna Maggie per salvare il presidente e salvare la propria vita.

Le tracce musicali sono in grado di evocare emozioni intense e contrastanti, che si adattano perfettamente alle diverse situazioni che si susseguono nel corso della narrazione. La colonna sonora non è riuscita a sostenere efficacemente la narrazione e ha finito per passare quasi inosservata, rovinando così l'esperienza cinematografica complessiva.
