In the vein of "Desperado" and "High Plains Drifter", "Black Hat" is a classic Western for the next generation.
While the term 'Black Hat' is typically associated with the villain in a Western movie, Monroe (the mysterious stranger) is not so black and white. He's not looking to be a hero, he just wants somewhere to rest and drown his sorrows, and the small town of Dew Creek seems like the perfect place.
Yet, Monroe's hopes of peacefully drinking himself into oblivion are dashed by a band of outlaws who are terrorizing the town's aging sheriff and residents, including Susie-May, a girl from the local cathouse, and Sam, the owner of the saloon.
The arrival of Monroe appears to be the answer to their prayers. Sheriff Crowe is desperate to retire, with two young inexperienced deputies, so he makes a deal with Monroe, a man with nothing to lose, and the bullets start to fly. Dew Creek turns into a shooting-gallery as Monroe knocks back endless shots of red-eye and moonshine.
However, Jameison, the leader of the outlaws, reveals the secret of Monroe's dark and regretful past - Monroe's a wanted man with blood on his hands - leading Crowe to doubt his own decision to let this drunken gunslinger loose on his town.
Can Monroe find redemption and bring salvation, before he drinks himself into an early grave?
