Sinossi
Nel 1982, una massiccia astronave portante una popolazione aliena malconcia, soprannominata "I Gamberi", è apparsa sopra Johannesburg, in Sudafrica. Venticinque anni dopo, l'accoglienza iniziale da parte della popolazione umana è svanita. Il campo profughi dove gli alieni erano situati è deteriorato in un ghetto militarizzato chiamato Distretto 9, dove sono confinati e sfruttati nella miseria. Nel 2010, la società di armamenti, Multi-National United, è incaricata di sfrattare forzatamente la popolazione con l'operativo Wikus van der Merwe a capo. In questa operazione, Wikus viene esposto a una strana sostanza chimica aliena e deve fare affidamento sull'aiuto dei suoi unici due nuovi amici 'Gamberi'.
