Sinossi
Quando sua madre, che lo ha protetto per tutti i suoi 40 anni, muore, il sensibile aspirante poeta Elling viene mandato a vivere in un istituto statale.
Lì incontra Kjell Bjarne, un gigante gentile e vergine ossessionato dalle donne di 40 anni.
Dopo due anni, gli uomini vengono rilasciati e forniti di un appartamento finanziato dallo stato e di un sussidio con la speranza che possano vivere da soli.
Inizialmente, il semplice atto di andare dietro l'angolo per fare la spesa è una sfida.
Attraverso un'amicizia nata da una disperata dipendenza, l'insicuro Elling e il rumoroso Kjell Bjarne, aspirante donnaiolo, scoprono che non solo possono sopravvivere all'esterno, ma possono prosperare.
Ma mentre il loro coraggio cresce, trovano modi strambi per affrontare la società e stringere amicizie nei posti più improbabili.
