Sinossi

Cassim Kaif è un giovane uomo musulmano che lavora nel negozio di tessuti di suo padre (Ebrahim Kaif). È il sogno di Ebrahim che Cassim prenda il controllo del negozio. Il negozio non si trova in una buona parte della città ed è in difficoltà per sopravvivere. Ebrahim è coinvolto in una faida trentennale con suo fratello su una questione di principio politico, mentre il nuovo negozio del fratello ha avuto successo, il negozio di Ebrahim sta lottando. Questo aumenta il bisogno di Ebrahim che Cassim prenda il controllo del negozio e lo faccia avere successo.

Nel frattempo... Cassim ha scoperto di avere un talento per il cabaret. È divertente e coloro che lo conoscono gli dicono che ha il talento per arrivare lontano. Non sa cosa significhi tutto questo, sa solo che ama farlo e vuole perseguirlo. Il problema è che non ha detto a suo padre di questa sua altra vita.

Quando Ebrahim scopre del cabaret, Cassim si trova in conflitto diretto con suo padre, la sua famiglia e la sua comunità. Suo padre gli chiede di fare una scelta.

Material è uno sguardo caldo, divertente ed emozionale alle lotte di una famiglia musulmana di fronte al mondo moderno, esplorando il destino, la responsabilità e cosa significhi veramente famiglia. Il film è interamente ambientato nell'enclave indiana di Forsdburg, Johannesburg, Sud Africa.
