Sinossi
Nel 1929, una nove anni impoverita di nome Chiyo da un villaggio di pescatori viene venduta a una casa di geisha nel quartiere di Gion a Kyoto e sottoposta a un trattamento crudele dai proprietari e dalla geisha capo Hatsumomo, che è gelosamente invidiosa della straordinaria bellezza di questa nuova giovane ragazza.
Hatsumomo's bitter rival Mameha rescues Chiuo and mentors her as she becomes Sayuri, a geisha fully trained in all the artistic and social skills a geisha must master in order to survive in her society.
As a renowned geisha she enters a society of wealth, privilege, and political intrigue. As World War II looms, Japan and the geisha's world are forever changed by the onslaught of history.
