Sinossi
Il Profeta racconta la storia immaginaria di una donna di nome Devaduta, che segue la sua vita dall'adolescenza fino ai suoi ultimi giorni. Devaduta è nata in povertà e la sua infanzia è segnata da un lavoro senza fine e dal suo rapporto con un padre violento, un ubriacone e un violentatore di bambini. Ad un certo punto, Devaduta inizia a sentire una voce che identifica come la "Voce di Dio". Fugge da casa sua, per trovare lavoro come donna delle pulizie in un'accademia di danza. Il guru di questa accademia individua in lei una scintilla e la allena, a vederla sbocciare in una danzatrice per eccellenza. Con la sua fama e le sue fortune, Devaduta continua a costruire un Ashram per aiutare i bambini bisognosi, mentre è costantemente guidata dalla "Voce di Dio". Il suo lavoro sociale e il fatto che lei ascolti "la Voce di Dio" le fa ottenere l'epiteto di "Il Profeta" dal popolo.
