Sinopse

La película comienza en el vestuario lleno de chicas adolescentes, incluyendo a Carrie White (Sissy Spacek). Carrie tiene su primer periodo, y después de angustiarse, pide ayuda. En lugar de ayudar, las otras chicas la ridiculizan y la acosan, arrojándole tampones, toallas sanitarias y papel higiénico. La profesora Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) entra corriendo para detener el alboroto. White, que parece estar conteniendo una rabia extrema, rompe una bombilla. Después de interrogar a Carrie, Miss Collins se da cuenta de que Carrie no está al tanto del concepto de la menstruación. Debido a esto, Miss Collins pide al director de la escuela que excuse a Carrie de la clase de gimnasia durante una semana debido al trauma.

De camino a casa, Carrie utiliza su recién descubierta telequinesis para detener a un chico que se burla de ella. Mientras está en casa, Carrie es atormentada por su madre delirante (Piper Laurie), que encierra a Carrie en un armario y la obliga a rezar, ya que cree que Carrie recibió su periodo debido al pecado.

Miss Collins, aún furiosa por el incidente, reprende a las otras chicas y las obliga a través de una detención, deliberadamente agotándolas físicamente. La líder del grupo, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen), se niega a participar, y como castigo, es prohibida de asistir al próximo baile de graduación. Furiosa, culpa a Carrie por su desgracia. Después de que Tommy le pide ir al baile, Carrie se niega, pensando que se trata de otro truco. Después de una charla reconfortante con Miss Collins, y después de la insistencia de Tommy, Carrie finalmente acepta ir al baile con Tommy.

Mientras todos se preparan para el baile, Chris conspira con su novio Billy Nolan (John Travolta) y su mejor amiga Norma (P.J. Soles) para vengarse de Carrie. Van a una granja y sacrifican algunos cerdos, drenan su sangre en un cubo y colocan el cubo en una de las vigas del gimnasio de la escuela.

Carrie pide permiso a su madre para ir al baile. Esto lleva a una violenta discusión entre Carrie y su madre; quien utiliza su telequinesis para cerrar ventanas y puertas en su casa. Después de otra pelea entre Carrie y su madre la noche del baile, Carrie utiliza sus poderes para empujar a su madre a una cama y le dice que debe dejar de preocuparse.

Carrie y Tommy llegan al baile, y Carrie comienza a sentirse aceptada por los compañeros de Tommy. Miss Collins le cuenta a Carrie la historia de su propio baile, diciéndole que debe atesorar el recuerdo para siempre. Carrie y Tommy bailan juntos; Tommy se ha enamorado de Carrie y la besa.

Luego, convencida de que su hija es una bruja malvada, saca un cuchillo de cocina y apuñala a Carrie por la espalda. Carrie cae por las escaleras y se aleja de su madre. Cuando su madre la acorrala en la cocina, Carrie utiliza su poder para crucificar a su madre con cuchillos y herramientas de cocina. Después de la muerte, Carrie se siente llena de culpa y, utilizando las velas encendidas, prende fuego a su casa. La casa finalmente se derrumba y Carrie muere entre los escombros.

Más tarde, Sue, habiendo sobrevivido a la catástrofe de la noche del baile, sufre depresión por la muerte de sus compañeros. Experimenta una pesadilla en la que visita la ubicación de la casa de Carrie. Cuando se agacha para poner flores en el lote quemado, la mano ensangrentada de Carrie se levanta desde los escombros y la agarra. Sue luego despierta gritando en brazos de su madre.
