Sinopse
Baseado no romance de Graham Greene, esta é a história de um advogado francês Chavel (Sir Anthony Hopkins), que, enquanto estava preso pelos alemães durante a ocupação, troca seus bens materiais com outro prisioneiro em troca de sua vida quando condenado ao pelotão de fuzilamento.
Ao final da guerra, Chavel, se passando por um dos outros prisioneiros, retorna à sua casa, que agora é ocupada por Therese (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas), a irmã do prisioneiro com quem ele trocou seus pertences, e que aguarda amargamente o retorno do homem que indiretamente causou a morte de seu irmão.
Sua verdadeira identidade desconhecida para Therese, Chavel é convidado a ficar como zelador e identificar Chavel caso ele retorne à casa. A relação entre Chavel e Therese se desenvolve até que, uma noite, alguém se apresenta à porta dizendo ser Chavel (Sir Derek Jacobi).
